There are algorithms for it OS books.
4 prevention as far as i can remember is, bring a process 4m ready to running state only when all the resources to b needed by the process is free and if it is so then allocate the resources to the process and put it in the running queue

use concurrency mechanisms such as monitors in order to ensure that certain operations that target shared resources are only executed by one (or a limited number of) thread(s) at a time...or use semaphores (e.g., mutual exclusion lock) on shared resources to limit access by threads.

Check for the exsistence of cycle path for that particular resource. If so, there exist deadlock.
It can be avoided by using checkpoints or by killing the particular thread.
