It's impossible to do it in a plane without breaking matches into smaller pieces. Four triangles has 12 edges. That means each of the six matches must be an edge in two triangles. Tetrahedron is the only object having that property.
make a Pyramid ,,,its impossible to make a 4 equi. triangles using 6 matchsticks in 2-d ...make a triangular pyramid with 3 sticks on base and 3 on the edges ,, :P :D
It is possible to even make 8 equilateral triangles with 6 match sticks.
Use 3 matchsticks to make 1 huge triangle. Use the other 3 matchsticks to make another big equilateral triangle.
Superimpose second triangle over the first but upside down. (Make sure every side in 1st triangle has 1 side of 2nd triangle parallel to it. Hence you must have 3 sets of parallel lines)
You will find a flower pattern with each of its 6 petals acting like an equilateral triangle.
Make a tetrahedron.
