Enums are just faster to code when what you want to do is have a type that takes on one of a fixed set of values. It also expresses programmer intent more clearly. Using static final int variables is not as safe because a function that logically accepts one of a few values could be passed any integer. Enums ensure at compile-time that a value corresponding to one of the allowed constants has been passed.

I think the fact that static variables are not thread-safe could also be mentioned in this context.

@Pavan: No. Immutable static variables are thread safe, and enums can be thought of as immutable static variables.
