try and find out in a subtle manner the reasons for his attitude towards work,,,there could be numerous variables that could be responsible for it and then if it is something that you can help him out,,,the bottom line,,communicate effectively

Ask him whats wrong. If he has attitute problems, Terminate him

i will first see whether he is doing his work properly or not, instead of seeing whether he is working hard or not because he may have better iq than others. if not i will see whether he can fit in some other position or team in my company. if none of the above works i warn him like if you don't work i will terminate you.At worst case i will terminate him.
