It's safer, since we cannot pass by reference with null value

void foo(int &x){
	//cout<<x;//Crashed
}
...
int *p=0;
foo(*p);

Here p is passed by reference but it is a null reference.

Not really. You can't dereference uninitialized or null pointers. It is undefined behavior. Passing null or uninitialized pointers to functions is legal.

actually, by using pass by reference you are passing a const pointer .
void foo(int &x){
}
in foo() function you can change the value of x but can't make it to point to some other integer...

for normal data types, pass by value and reference dont have any memory constraints, but when passing objects once should use reference as by value if the object is big can take loads of time
