The standard answers are:

1) Keep the critical sections (i.e. those areas which require synchronization) small, so that the amount of time spent holding the lock is minimized.

2) Always release the locks in the same order that you acquired them (this avoids the dreaded circular dependency).

by careful coding :) also there are dead lock preventing methods like killing the task after some time

obviously, careful coding only can't prevent deadlock; sometimes you are forced to confront deadlock....

Bankers algorithm can be used to prevent deadlock.

When designing algorithm, try to draw a waiting tree, which representing the relationship between locks. If a cycle is detected, then there is deadlock exist.
