The why you forgot is because the global $num is different from the $num inside the function. It's a question of scope.

the value is 0 not 10.. because when you do any operation on initialize value if the operation is done with int the default value is 0

so $num = $num * 10 // $num = 0 * 10 = 0;

$num will echo 10 as the variable $num is out of scope for the function multiply()
