Besides the memory block (returned by malloc) to use, there is an additional block (header or sometimes both header/footer) which stores information will be needed by free.
When free() call is invoked, it points to the header block and retrieve necessary information, such as the memory size and its status. Then, place the appropriate size of block back to the free list for recycling. It doesn't return the memory to OS until the program exits.

void free(void*p)

p points to the starting address of the info block . A header of fixed size ( Os dependent ) precedes it .
Header essentially has the size information .
