Reserve is used when you know the possible size of the vector or an estimation of the possible size. Adding elements to a vector without reserving such that the number of elements exceeds the capacity would cause a costly re-allocation.

In terms of performance, deque can handle a push_back in constant time while a vector can also handle a push_back in constant time provided re-allocation does not occur. If a re-allocation occurs it will handle push_back in linear time.
