* put an "incomplete" struct pointer type in the .h file associated with the .c file above, and also prototypes of all public functions related to the .c file (do not include private functions)
* you can also make all private helper functions in the .c file above have "static" labels on them to keep them from being accessed outside the file
include the .h file in other files if those files want to access the machinery you built in the .c file
