Just an alternative, will implicitly type cast to integer.

codePointAt(int index)
Returns the character (Unicode code point) at the specified index.

Is it a question google asked???

Anyway, you could convert to byte[] using utf-8 encoding using the string function. If it is ascii string, you could refer any index as it would represent one character. Won't work with 2 byte or 3 byte characters though. What is the specific requirement.
