Intuit Interview Question
InternsCountry: India
Interview Type: Phone Interview
Assumptions: G1 and G2 are gatekeepers (not assuming which standing to heaven or hell, this is to find)
Ask following question to G1
"Given that G2 is the Hell gatekeeper but he is saying G1 is the Hell gatekeeper, is G2 lying?"
this above statement will only be a valid statement, if it considers the mutually exclusive Truthness personality of G1 and G2
Above question can be split into two sub statements
1. Given that G2 is the Hell gatekeeper
2. but he(G2) is saying G1 is the Hell gatekeeper
So if we suppose that statement 1 is True, then statement 2 must be a False
Suppose G2 is the Hell gatekeeper :: our supposition
If G1 says: "Yes G2 is lying, I'm heaven gatekeeper" then:
Question is a valid statement and so this means G1 is speaking the truth and G1 is the heaven gatekeeper
If G1 says: "G2 is speaking the truth" then:
Question becomes invalid as G1 answer goes against the mutually exclusivity
so above supposition goes wrong that G2 is the Hell gatekeeper so G2 is the Heaven gatekeeper
and so G1 is a lier and he's the Hell gatekeeper
Errata in Above answer by me.

The criteria for the answer to be true is: one is true and the other is false.
therefore: if the answer for any question is:
YES,YES = LIE
NO,NO = LIE,
YES,NO = TRUTH,
NO,YES = TRUTH,
it does matter what question you ask:
the answer must match to the profile of the gatekeepers:
the hell's gatekeep always disagree "lie/opposite" with the heaven's gatekeeper.
I would ask to Door 1 gatekeeper the following question: "Is heaven gatekeeper the honest one?", if he answers YES, it means that Door 1 is for heaven, if he answers NO, means that Door 1 is for hell. Lets analyze the 4 possibilities tree and understand why.
1) If he answers YES and this is TRUE, means that "the heaven gate keeper is honest one", and since this is the truth, then he is the honest, and the honest is in the heaven door, so in this case, door 1 would be the heaven one.
2) If he answers YES and this is FALSE, means that "the heaven gate keeper is NOT the honest one", which means that "the heaven gatekeeper is the lier one", but this is a lie, and he is the lier, and the lier is in the heaven door, so also in this case door 1 would be the heaven one.
So then, if he answers YES, no matter if that is TRUE or FALSE, you know that door 1 is the heaven one.
Actually we don't need to analyze the other two possiblilites, but lets do it:
3) If he answers NO and this is TRUE, means that "the hell gate keeper is honest one", and since this is the truth, then he is the honest, and the honest is in the hell door, so in this case door 1 would be the hell one.
4) If he answers NO and this is FALSE, means that "the heaven gate keeper is the honest one", which means that "the hell gatekeeper is the lier one", but this is a lie, so then he is the lier, and the lier is in the hell door, so also in this case, door 1 would be the hell one.

First question to g1 to find whether he is honest
Q1: both the gates lead to heaven ?
If g1 says no, he is honest . Then you will ask g2 about gate to heaven and choose gate depending on his answer.(g2 isn't honest here)
If g1 says yes, then g2 is honest. Ask g2 about gate to heaven and go into whichever he points to or into same gate if he says yes or other gate if he says no

"If I asked the other guardian which door leads to heaven, what would he tell me?"
The door that the guardian specfies will be the one that leads to hell, so you know the other one leads to heaven.
This is because if you asked the guardian who tells the truth this question, he will tell the truth in that the other guardian will lie, and show you the door to hell. If you asked the guardian that always lies, he will lie by showing you the door to hell, because the other guardian would show you to door to heaven.

If you asked the guardian that always lies, he will lie by showing you the door to hell, because the other guardian would show you to door to heaven.
Ask "What door would the other one say is the heaven door?"
Case 1: Liar - He would say the door that is not the heaven door as he would lie that the truthteller would say the hell door.
Case 2: Truth - He would say the door that is not the heaven door as he would tell the truth that the liar would lie.
This works because if both were liars then the answer would be easy as you would just go in the opposite door. And this question forces the truth teller to "lie" as he is answering honestly for the liar.
So either way just take the other door.
Ask anyone "What will the other person say if i ask him what door is he guarding?"
This basically negates every answer.
1. Liar guards Heaven and you ask the truthful guard. His answer will be "Hell". So you know that the other gate leads to heaven.
2. Liar guards the Hell gate and you ask him. His answer will be "Hell". So you know that the other gate leads to heaven.
3. Liar guards the Heaven gate and you ask him. His answer will be "Heaven". So you know this guy guards Heaven.
4. Liar guards Hell and you ask other guard. His answer will be "Heaven". So you know this guy guards Heaven.
So all answers be negated once. :)
a= gate to heaven
b = gate to hell
Question to ask :- If I ask the other guy what he will the gate to heaven is ?
Liar Gate keeper's ans = b (Honest man will tell a. our Liar has to lie so he will tell b)
Honest Gate keeper's ans = b (Liar will b . So our honets man will tell the same)
So we have to choose the opposite of what ever answer we get here
a= gate to heaven
b = gate to hell
Question to ask : What will other guy tell which gate will go to heaven
Liar Gatekeepers ans = b (honest man will tell a, our guy has to lie. so he will tell b )
Honest Gatekeepers ans = b (Liar will tell b, our guy will tell the smae )
Now you can pick the opposite of whatever ans you get and go to heaven
I will ask
1. 1st gate keeper if i have 5 fingers in my one hand. if he says yes then he is a truthful. i will ask the 2nd gate keeper if this is the heaven gate if he if he says yes i will choose the first door because he is a liar.
2. 1st gate keeper if i have 5 fingers in my one hand. if he says no then he is a liar. i will ask the 2nd gate keeper if this is the heaven gate if he if he says yes i will choose the Second door because he is a truthful.
But the requirement is: You can only ask one question to one of them in order to find the way to heaven.
You have to ask "Which door leads to hell?" to one gate keeper and "Which door leads to heaven?" to other gate keeper. Both will direct you to the same door. choose the other door to go to Heaven.
Hi Ravi - If the Truthful guy is standing in front of the Heavens gate and you ask him "Which door leads to Heaven?" - He will answer This door.
Then - The false guy standing in front of the Hell gate will be asked "Which door leads to Hell?" He will answer the other door - By your logic if you choose the other door - you go to Hell
this question demonstrates the implication relation. primary discreet structures.
- Joshi of Vatsa. April 30, 2015You'd ask one gatekeeper what other one would say if they were asked is heaven behind the door...
no means you select that door, yes means you select the other door.
