As user requests a certain resource (a url, service etc.) api gateway will intercept and redirect to authentication service if not already authenticated. The authenticated service will be a lambda function (prefer dynamically typed language like Node.js) which will have logic to contact an Identity provider (Corporate AD, Open ID auth using facebook, google etc.) and confirm the identity. The Idp will generate an identity token once valid user which will be send back to calling program which will redirect the user to authorization service.
