you pour 3L to the 5L jug twice till 5L jug is full, what is left is 1L in the 3L jug. now empty the 5L jug and pur the 1L into the 5L jug, then measure 3L using the 3L jug and pour it to the 5L jug which has 1L in it.

- Fill 5 L jug
- pour it into 3 L jug
- Empty 3 L jug
- Pour the remaining from 5 L jug into 3 L jug. (Now, there will be 2 L filled in 3 L jug)
- Fill 5 L jug again
- Pour it into 3 L jug until 3 L just is filled
- Now you have 4 L filled in 5 L jug

4 = 5-(3-(5-3))

4 = 2*5 - 2*3

where 2*5 means fill 5L full 2 times from the water pool
-2*3 means fill 3L twice from 5L and discard the water

really easy way to do it

fill 3 jug empty into 5, then fill 3 again and empty into 5, you will have 1 left in the 3 jug, empty the 5, and put the 1 litre in the 5 litre jug, then fill the 3 litre jug and add it to the one, thats 4 in total

use ax + by = (a,b) and solve for any given numbers.

5-3+5-3

put 3L twice in 5L so in #l remain 1L; empty 5L nd put 1L in 5L and add 3 more L
