Smartpointers handle pointers to disposable resources. Their meaning is to help to prevent resource leaks.
For example, in C++ they are usually instantiated on the Stack, so they will be release the encapsulated resource if the program leaves the actual scope (RAII).
This concept maybe interesting anyway even if there is a garbage collection available. Sometimes its not a good good idea to keep resources locked and wait for the garbage collection to take care of it and clean up. For example in C# we can use the using statement.
