Hey folks
- axecapone July 20, 2012
I am looking at interviewing with companies like Google and Facebook which are considered very competitive. Careercup has been very resourceful in helping me look at these problems.
When I see problems on Careercup questions, I cant get an idea if its phone interview or in person. Most problems are tagged as "phone interview". Sometimes the problem is super hard and is called "Phone interview" while some really simple ones are "in person" interview.
So my question is what kind of questions can I expect in "in person" interview? Some example questions would help me get a better understanding.| Flag | PURGE - 1 Answer DBMS
Question Number 1

Consider a table "Student" consisting of columns (Student ID, Student Address, Course).
Every student is allowed to enroll in multiple courses and every course is allowed to enroll more than one student. Also every time a student changes address, all his relevant records must be changed to reflect the new address.
What would be the Normal form required to avoid this redundancy?

I had been invited for a f2f interview with Adobe after clearing a telephonic and written round. It didnt take me 2 mins to find out the person who was taking my interview was a fool and also didnt have any manners. Once, he asked me some ques related to an algorithm. Since he was not satisfied I asked him for his view. When he gave his by heart answer which he had memorised from some book, I explained that my sol was much optimized both in time and space. In short, The Adobe interviewers are pompous fools and they dont know how to show the respect that a candidate deserves. But I am not the one to suffer from fools and gave him a piece of my mind. Hi, this is a question regarding the solution to 4.1 in the book "Cracking the Code Interview 5th edition."
- opqpop June 28, 2012
The questions asks to code up a method that checks if a tree is balanced or not, stating the definition of balanced is for all nodes, the heights of both subtrees do not differ by more than 1.
The solution it gives involves recursively checking the heights of a node's children, and returning -1 if that child is not balanced, or the height if that child is balanced. As soon as a node knows a child is not balanced, it will not check if the node itself is balanced, and instead return -1, because the tree cannot be balanced if it finds any node that is not balanced.
At the end of the solution, it states the code runs in O(N^2) time and O(log N) space. I could not understand why it's O(log N) space and not O(N) space. For example, if we have a tree where all children are left nodes, wouldn't the recursive calls go through all N nodes, and hence use O(N) space? Could someone explain where my misunderstanding is?

Hi, I'm a 3rd year student at a university in asia. I'm expecting to graduate in July 2013. I still have little experience doing projects. Right now I'm trying hard to do many projects to improve my experience and resume. But I'm still not sure what to do after graduating. Should I just continue to graduate study at my country and consider looking for job? (I'm not sure about continuing graduate study at US, as I might not have the money to pay the tuition fees), or should I just shoot for a job? Please share about your similar experience in this and anything that could count as a consideration to choose one (e.g salary and rank difference for undergradute and graduate students, etc.)

Hello all,
- GKalchev June 22, 2012
I am looking for a SDE position in Microsoft. I have looked through the jobs at Microsoft Careers but the problem is I do not know where(which team) I would fit. So the real question is: is there any chance to go through the interview process and Microsoft decide for which position I will be the best to suit? How can this happen?
I am also applying at Google but there I am talking with the recruiter for almost two months now and still I am waiting for the interview set up.
Any advice is very much welcome :)| Flag | PURGE
