I recently had a series of technical interviews for a data scientist position. To the best of my knowledge I answered all of the questions correctly, however I was rejected and the reason given was my lack of practical experience. This seems strange considering my experience did not come up at all during the technical interview. I would find it hard to believe that they would be too "scared" to tell me that it is actually because of my answers to the technical questions. I guess what confuses me is that the technical interview was independent of my past experience, so if the rejection was due to my lack of experience then why even have the technical interview?

I see 2 possibilities:
a) (most likely) It was their way of rejecting you without interview feedback. Companies don't usually provide proper feedback.
b) Your performance in the interviews was similar to another candidate which had more experience than you. Hence, they picked the other candidate.

That they interviewed you doesn't mean your lack of experience didn't count against you. It only means that (at the time they scheduled your interview) they thought you might stand a chance without the experience. So it might mean:

1. The team wasn't sure how good of a candidate they'd find, so they were willing to consider inexperienced candidates, but then they found someone who had both experience and good interview performance.
2. You did well, but not well enough to compensate for not having the experience.
3. You didn't do well.
